Get the recognition your chapter deserves: apply for national awards

Each year at the national conference, exceptional chapters are recognized for their outstanding achievements with prestigious national awards. Pictured above are the representatives of a few of the 2010 award-winning chapters. You can see a list of all 2010 award recipients here.
Many of these awards require that chapters apply or be nominated by May 15. Don't delay--read more about our chapter awards today!
Member selection was only the beginning!
You made it through member selection! Tapping and initiation are such special experiences for new Mortar Boards. Thank you all for the time and effort you have put or will be putting into making a lifelong memory for new members!
We mentioned this is last month's INK, but we'll repeat it here because it is so important! As officers, you can help get the new class off to a tremendous start. Officer transition is a special responsibility that you--as a leader of leaders--carry.
Responsibilities of the outgoing class
Transition and train new officers - A proper transition should include a group and one-on-one meeting, often a retreat, at which officer binders and records are passed from one officer to the next. Show new officers where files are located on your chapter's Google Docs page.
Share this issue of INK with new officers - If you happen to elect new officers during the month of April, forward this issue to them. It will help them get a head start on their responsibilities as officers.
Complete reports - It is the responsibility of the outgoing chapter to complete all chapter reports by May 15. Find a list of upcoming due dates and more information about reports below.
Responsibilities of the incoming class
Elect new officers - Before leaving campus for the summer, elect officers and use the Officer Address Information Form to report them to the National Office immediately, no later than May 15.
Register for the conference - Though all members are encouraged to attend, each chapter must send one official delegate to the annual Mortar Board National Conference. The official delegate registration is provided at no cost to the member*. This delegate should be the new chapter president, but if he or she cannot attend, the delegate may be another officer. More information about the conference is available online.
Get acquainted and keep in touch - The new chapter should set up at least one meeting before the end of the academic year so members can get to know each other and start planning. Members may be scattered during the summer, so please encourage them to stay in touch via e-mail, phone or with a chapter Facebook page.
*The chapter conference fee and funding from Mortar Board, Inc. cover transportation, lodging, meals and registration materials for one delegate per chapter. A chapter delegate choosing additional options, such as single rooms or optional entertainment activities, must pay for those fees personally, or through his or her chapter. There is a late fee of $75 for official delegate registrations made after May 15. This late fee is the personal expense of the delegate.
Completion of reports: a way to help us keep connected
Annual reports help the National Office keep connected to each chapter--which ultimately helps us better serve you! Chapters should turn in reports annually in order to be eligible for awards at the national conference.
All chapters, whether they are on the quarter system or semester system, must meet the May 15 deadline. If you have questions or concerns about your reports being incomplete please contact the National Office at reports@mortarboard.org. Late reports will be accepted but will not count toward national award eligibility.
All reports and the officer responsible for completing them, due May 15:

Chapter solutions: pass on your knowledge to new Mortar Board leaders at the 2011 Mortar Board National Conference
Did you love your conference experience? Have you gained knowledge and insight over the past year that you would like to share with other chapters? Then you should be a presenter at the Chapter Solutions Workshop!
This year, the Chapter Solutions Workshop will be offered prior to the start of the National Conference. In this preconference workshop, collegiate members and advisors from struggling chapters who are interested in intensive, hands-on problem solving will get one-on-one training provided by Mortar Board national leaders and their own peers--you!
If you have found success on your campus and have specific ideas to share about fundraising, campus programming and building chapter stature, send a Chapter Solutions Program Proposal to the National Office today. Share your Mortar Board knowledge with others and help a new class of leaders have a great conference, too!
Travel and accommodation fees do apply for Chapter Solutions presenters. You should arrange travel on your own, and double-occupancy hotel accommodations are $65 for one night's stay or $130 for two nights. If you request a single room, an additional fee of $65/night should be added.
Chapter Spotlight: Can you guess this chapter?

"We are Mortar Board" is a new feature on our blog. Here you can read spotlights on our chapters and collegiate and alumni members. Here we will share the story of our Society.

Pay It Forward: Help an underfunded chapter attend the conference |
The Mortar Board National Conference is a terrific learning opportunity for any member of Mortar Board.
The chapter conference fee and additional funding from Mortar Board, Inc. help support the cost of the official delegate's attendance, but some chapters do not have the means to send additional members to the conference.
You can help share the conference experience with a Mortar Board from another chapter with a donation to our Pay-It-Forward Fund. With a gift of any size, you can help to cover the registration fee and help a chapter leader have the leadership experience of a lifetime.
Your donation can be mailed to the Mortar Board National Office with a check written out to Mortar Board, Inc. with the Pay-It-Forward Fund written in the memo line. Contributions are tax-deductible.
If you represent an underfunded chapter and are interested in taking advantage of Mortar's Board Pay-It-Forward Fund, please e-mail conference@mortarboard.org.
As your chapter is transitioning officers, help the new class get a head start by passing on this issue of INK.
At your next meeting or when you meet one-on-one with new officers, make sure to discuss opportunities for your official delegate and other officers and members to attend the 2011 National Conference.
