National Mortar Board fees
Mortar Board requires members to pay national membership fees, in exchange for valuable support, services and the honor of lifetime membership in one of the most prestigious national senior honor societies.
Fees are a requirement of membership and all chapters are required to collect the listed fees on behalf of Mortar Board and submit to the National Office:

*Based on financial need, each chapter is permitted to waive one new member fee annually. The Coral V. Stevens Gift Membership is selected confidentially, and may be awarded to one new member or a few, up to a maximum of $60.
What do fees cover?
The $60 individual membership fee includes:
The chapter $150 conference fee:
- Helps defray a portion of the annual Mortar Board National Conference expenses
- Provides for chapter operations information shared at the conference
- Allows for official chapter delegates to participate in governance of the organization
- Supports a vehicle for chapters to come together annually to learn and share about scholarship, leadership and service
Membership and chapter conference fees have not been increased since 2005. In order for fees to remain affordable, it is imperative that chapters consider adding at least two additional members to their chapters in the coming year.
How does my chapter pay them?
Fees must be paid by ONE check or ONE credit card and submitted to the National Office, following the collection of required membership fees - normally collected between orientation and initiation.
You report your new members to the National Office on the Official Membership Report (OMR). Following your submission of part III of the OMR, the amount of fees your chapter owes will be calculated automatically for you. Please read this report as it can be a great help in determining total national fees due, including the conference fee.
If you need additional help with the OMR or payments, see page 12 of the Officer and Advisor Handbook.

Chapter Spotlight: University of Wyoming
The Cap & Gown Chapter at the University of Wyoming was among five chapters recognized at the 2007 National Conference as a Ruth Weimer Mount Chapter Excellence Award finalist. Their diverse talents, devotion to Mortar Board’s key ideals and commitment to the chapter are all keys to success.
Tradition is important to the chapter, founded locally in 1924 and chartered in 1933. Among their traditions is a special method of welcoming the new class, a formal ceremony known as “Torchlight Laurels.” This time-honored UW tradition, nearing its 57th year, brings together several organizations and societies to recognize more than 300 students for academic excellence, service and leadership.
Other well-loved annual events include “Top Prof” and “Tip of the Cap,” events to honor an esteemed faculty and staff member, respectively. Treasurer Daniel McCarthy explains, “We present them with a gift and give a short speech on why we have chosen to honor them. This is a good way to recognize the people that have made your years at this university so enjoyable.”
Beyond these great events, the chapter actively participates in several service activities. Members volunteer with SafeRide, Habitat for Humanity, Festival of Trees, hold book drives, work with their Mortar Board section to clean up the Garden of the Gods park and much more.
When asked if there were any tips for other chapters, Vice President Nick Gydesen had an answer. “We recommend each chapter puts someone in charge of acknowledging individuals for outstanding work. In our chapter, the vice president has taken on the responsibilities of ensuring Mortar Board members are publicly recognized for stepping up and doing things above and beyond what is asked of them. This includes things like sending group emails recognizing members, recognizing members during a meeting, or calling them personally after an event and telling them ‘good job.’”
Additionally, one member is chosen monthly as the Mortar Board Member of the Month (MBMM). Gydesen explained, “There's no better way to motivate individuals and inspire the rest of the group than noticing great work they're doing for the organization.”
Of course, the success lies in the members, who truly exemplify the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service. President Ariel Calmes explains, “There is nothing more important to being a chapter president than having a strong, motivated and talented chapter. I have this and more." |

What are you doing for Mortar Board week?
Mortar Board Week, held Feb. 10-16, 2008, is a great time to celebrate Mortar Board on your campus. What is your chapter doing? Even if you didn’t submit it on your Chapter Planning Calendar, let Mortar Board know! We would like to share this information with your university and local media to get the word out about Mortar Board. All information, big or small, can be sent to mbforum@mortarboard.org.
Icebreaker of the month
Two truths and a lie
Give everyone a pen and a piece of paper and tell them to number it from one to three.
In any given order, they need to write down two truths and one lie, about them or their past.
After everyone is done writing, they flip over their pieces of paper.
Go around the circle, one by one, letting each person say their name and then read their three items.
Everyone else is to write down each person's name and the item they thought was a lie for each individual.
The winner is decided by one of two ways:
- Whoever fooled the most people with their lie.
- Whoever guessed the most lies as other people were sharing.
Tips:
*You want the two truths that you pick to be things that people wouldn't expect about you.(Example: If you are a big guy and you took ballet when you were young, choose that.)
*You want your one lie to be something that sounds like it could be true. (Example: If you are an extrovert and "bubbly" but were never a cheerleader, say you were.)
Alternatives:
You can also do this as a verbal game without pens/paper
Materials:
Enough pens and papers for everyone.
