LEAD

LEAD: Leadership Excellence and Advisor Development
Advisor certification and enrichment

In research conducted in 2007-2008 by the American College Honor Societies (ACHS) the greatest challenge mentioned by member societies was advisors.

Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society, proudly a member of ACHS, began examining this information further and found that retaining advisors, building satisfactory advisory teams, acquisition of and support for advisors and maintaining good connections between advisors and university administrators were all opportunity areas. Late in 2009 Mortar Board developed a curriculum addressing these issues. Mortar Board has presented three LEAD sessions nationally and will offer a fourth in August 2013 in Atlanta.

What is LEAD?

In 2010, the national Mortar Board Advisor Task Force piloted LEAD: Leadership Excellence and Advisor Development for advisors of all experience levels. The pilot program, held in Chicago in July 2010, promised participants that they would learn:

  • How to effectively advise the collegiate chapter's leadership team, the cream of the campus crop
  • How to cultivate relationships among a diverse group of students
  • How to enhance students' co-curricular education through many opportunities for teaching and interacting outside of the classroom
  • How to help chapter leaders apply their existing skills to the one-of-a-kind leadership situations that they face
  • How to enhance your own interpersonal assets to work best with millennial students
  • How to create and maintain a strong advisor team to help your chapter and balance your workload
  • Best practices in student organization advisement with topics including fundraising, member motivation, conflict resolution, risk management and more

LEAD is sponsored by gifts from generous Mortar Board members and by the Frances Aicher Lewis Endowment and the Board of Trustees of the Mortar Board National Foundation.

Leadership Excellence and Advisor Development (LEAD) FAQ

Why have Leadership Excellence and Advisor Development (LEAD)?
Advisors are the "guides on the side" of every student organization. Each chapter needs strong advisors who exemplify the leadership traits that chapter leaders must exhibit to grow and strengthen their student organization or honor society on campus. Advisors need not "go it alone." Mortar Board wants to show support for the important role of advising and help give advisors the tools to make their advising experience a rich and rewarding one.

What is a certification for advisor?
This certification program provides advisors with a credential that will be meaningful personally as well as in the workplace. Satisfactory completion entitles the advisor to claim the designation as a LEAD-certified advisor. Access to advising skills materials for completers will be accessible on Mortar Board’s special LEAD website, and continuing advisory support will be available after each program through tune-up calls, advisor chat, email and web posts.

How can I afford to travel for this program?
We have learned that many advisors work with their supervisors to acquire time off and even monetary support for attendance at special leadership education programs. Chapter funding should also provide for an advisor's transportation to LEAD. Let's say that an advisor's employer pays for half the cost of the experience, and the advisor's Mortar Board (or other organization) chapter covers the other half; the advisor can attend at little to no cost to herself or himself.

Mortar Board is providing scholarships for advisors to attend LEAD. Please contact your section coordinator or the National Office for more information.

What are the hotel accommodations for this program?
Hotel rooms are priced a la carte to allow LEAD participants to make reservations as they like. The single occupancy room rate per night is $140 and the double occupancy room rate per night is $70.
