How to run
To nominate yourself, please submit a statement of interest (outlined below) on or before June 8 to conference@mortarboard.org. All members interested in running for the student representative position must attend an orientation session on Friday, July 20 at 1 p.m. or contact Executive Director Jane Hamblin (jhamblin@mortarboard.org) to set up an alternate orientation prior to the conference. Those who do not attend an orientation session may not run for the National Council.

Your statement of interest
Your statement of interest will be provided to all delegates attending the conference and can assist in gaining votes. Members who determine their candidacy after June 9 will not have statements distributed to all members. In 300 words or less, statements should address the following areas:

  • Biographical information such as name, school, major/minor and hometown
  • What you feel is your greatest strength and how that will help you in the position of student representative
  • Why you seek this position
  • If you will be off campus for reasons such as internships, student teaching or other employment or schooling opportunities, how do you plan to stay in touch with your chapter and the duties of this position?

Statements should be e-mailed to conference@mortarboard.org on or before June 8.

Additional advertising
Candidates are permitted to create handouts or campaign materials (with a strict spending limit of $10) for the conference if they choose.

Your speech
Each candidate will be required to give a brief two-minute speech on Friday evening, July 20. This speech should address how the nominee plans to serve Mortar Board and his/her vision for the future of the organization. Run-off elections will be held if necessary. The announcement of the new student representative will take place on Saturday, July 21.

To nominate yourself, please submit a statement of interest to conference@mortarboard.org on or before June 8.
