Mortar Board searching for new Executive Director

A committee formed by the Mortar Board National Council and National Foundation has launched an extensive search to find an ideal executive director to lead the society in lieu of the April departure of Mortar Board's former executive director. Applications are being accepted now through Sunday, July 12. The committee anticipates that the selected candidate will start his or her time with Mortar Board in the fall.

Mortar Board is an organization that requires visionary leadership and a strong commitment to our ideals of scholarship, leadership and service. National President Sally Steadman explained that "we are committed to ensuring that a well-qualified, devoted candidate will guide Mortar Board’s future as the society’s newest executive director.  This multi-faceted position requires that an individual also serve as the society’s chief financial officer, director of development and spokesperson. It is our goal to find a candidate with extensive knowledge about Mortar Board and the diverse skills and experience that are necessary to continue to build upon our society’s rich traditions as we move forward."

All materials pertinent to the search for a new executive director, including the complete position description, have been made available online at www.mortarboard.org/EDsearch.

If you are interested in applying or know anyone who may be interested in applying for this position, please direct any questions to Search Committee Chair Jane Beyer at jbeyer@mortarboard.org.

Have a productive summer as a Mortar Board advisor

Despite the fact that most chapters are not actively involved in campus activities throughout the summer, there are opportunities for a chapter advisor to be productive and stay involved with Mortar Board.

Register a delegate for the annual conference - Each chapter is required to send an official delegate to the Mortar Board National Conference each year. To see if your chapter has registered, please check this list.

Consider attending the conference yourself - Advisors are invited to enjoy Mortar Board training, leadership activities and more at the 2009 Mortar Board National Conference for a registration fee of $225, which covers all accommodations, meals and program materials.  Transportation, however, is not funded or provided by Mortar Board. You may register online.

Ensure that all forms and payment have been submitted - It is important to check your chapter's records and know whether all reports have been submitted. However, the Official Membership Report (OMR) and payment are the most important aspects of this form. If not submitted, your chapter may be put on probation. Please contact Mary Cay Kuder at mkuder@mortarboard.org or 800-989-6266 ext. 103 to discuss your chapter's account status if you have any questions.

Seek out additional chapter advisors - Although it varies from one school to another, Mortar Board recommends that each chapter have an advisory team to help balance responsibilities for an even workload. If your chapter is in need of advisors, seek assistance from the university's student activities office, which often keeps a record of faculty or staff who are interested in getting more involved as advisors on campus.

Read Mortar Board policies - Become more familiar with Mortar Board by reading through the Officer & Advisor Handbook, Membership Selection Handbook, and Bylaws.

Discuss chapter strengths and weaknesses - If you have been a chapter advisor for some time, it is a good idea to discuss the chapter's history, strengths and weaknesses with the official conference delegate. With your input, they can choose specific conference sessions that will help guide your chapter to a successful academic year.

Get in touch with your section coordinator - Mortar Board's section coordinators are your liaisons to the National Office, happy to help with any problems or provide Mortar Board advice. We recommend that if you are not already in touch with your section coordinator, you e-mail them to introduce yourself and build a strong relationship for the coming academic year.

Provide feedback with the Advisor Annual Report

The required Advisor Annual Report provides the National Office with important information about your chapter’s operations and solicits feedback to better serve you and your chapter. For example:

  • Do you feel supported by the National Office?
  • Have you been in contact with your section coordinator?
  • What types of materials would be useful to you as an advisor?
  • Do you have suggestions for how to improve Advisor News to best serve you?

Through the report, you may also request a letter acknowledging your role as chapter advisor be sent by the National Office to your supervisor at work.

Please complete this required report and share your recommendations for improving advisor relations so Mortar Board can best serve you.

In case you missed it

In May, the Mortar Board National Office sent a letter to all 2008-2009 chapter advisors. This letter included some year-end updates, information about the Mortar Board National Conference and an announcement about Mortar Board's former executive director, Jon Cook. If you did not receive the letter, you may read it online.

What is chapter probation?

All chapters should strive to remain in good standing nationally. In order to be in good standing, the chapter should have a "cleared account," which indicates that the chapter has submitted all vital reports and fees.

A chapter that fails to clear their account may be put on national probation. For one year, the chapter will be closely monitored by the National Office. If they fail to clear their account status or commit additional infractions, they may be placed on the inactive chapter list. The National Council may recommend disaffiliation for these chapters at the following national conference, at which point the delegates will vote on the issue.

Additionally, chapters who are on probation or do not have cleared accounts will not be permitted to vote at the Mortar Board National Conference.
