So, what’s next: keeping your Mortar Board connections

Your collegiate membership has offered you a chance to develop your leadership skills, helped you serve your university and community, and connected you to new friends and social opportunities. So, what’s next?

Now you will join the ranks of Mortar Board’s 250,000+ alumni. Being a Mortar Board is a lifelong honor, and there are plenty of opportunities to continue living out our ideals of scholarship, leadership and service.

On the chapter level, keep in touch with your classmates, advisors and the new class of Mortar Boards. Never miss an opportunity to keep connections! If your chapter has a newsletter or social media presence, keep in touch. Not only will you hear how your chapter grows and develops, but perhaps you can even share your memories and experiences with each new class.

On the regional level, check to see if there is a Mortar Board alumni chapter in your area. If it is one thing Mortar Boards know, it is the value of networking! If there is not an active chapter, find out how you can start one.

There are many opportunities to continue your involvement on the national level as well:

  • Join our LinkedIn group to access an amazing networking and professional resource (read more below).
  • Stay in touch by following us on social media and signing up for our newsletters and the Forum.
  • Continue to support the development of chapters and Mortar Board’s national initiatives with an annual sustaining membership.
  • Find out how you can be a part of Mortar Board’s national leadership.

Experience the Mortar Board National Conference

This was a testimonial from an attendee of the Mortar Board National Conference. And, as simple as this statement is, it captures how you will feel after you attend the conference!

The Mortar Board National Conference has something for everyone:

  • Leadership development opportunities? Check.
  • Inspirational guest speakers? Check.
  • A fun weekend in the Windy City? Check.
  • A chance to meet other Mortar Boards from around the nation and rub shoulders with national leadership (i.e., an amazing networking opportunity)? Double check.

The chapter president is required to attend and serves as the official delegate. The conference has much to offer other chapter officers and members. The conference will help you understand how to get the most out of your Mortar Board experience, for sure—and you will also learn important professional and life skills and get tools to help you continue your pursuit of excellence.

Register for the conference by May 15 and you, too, can Mortar Board.

Preparing to make an impression
Once you put your network to work for you, you will need to make sure that you are ready to make a great impression on a potential employer. Some things to keep in mind include:

Résumé and cover letter– Make sure your résumé is up to date and has perfect spelling and grammar. Think of it as your first impression with an employer--you want it to be good! Use your network to help you create a compelling cover letter and resume; ask someone you know to review it and give you advice.

Online networking sites such as LinkedIn also give you a chance to highlight your skills and experience in new ways--but the spelling and grammar rules still apply!

Clean up your social networking profiles – Employers might just Google you or check out your Facebook or Twitter pages. What will they see? If you have inappropriate photos, comments or language on your pages, this could damage your chances of landing the job.

Make sure your phone is ready – Yep, even your voicemail message can leave an impression on an employer. Ring back tones or casual messages might not get a good reaction. Try sticking with a professional and courteous message while you are searching for a job.

Use your university – Use your college’s career services office to take advantage of job search engines, professional workshops, job search advice and mentors.

Start early – Whether you are looking for a full-time job or a summer internship, it is a good idea to start early. Some companies know far in advance which positions will be open. Getting hired early can leave you worry-free when it is crunch time for others.

Check multiple sources – Use the Mortar Board job search engine, LinkedIn, Internships.com, Idealist.org (specifically for nonprofit positions), and, of course, your network to find out about opportunities in your area.

Brush up on your interview skills – Check out commonly asked questions, research the company interviewing you, and think of insightful questions to ask the employer. Always remember that leaving an interview without asking questions is a no-no.
