What will you accomplish this year?

From the left: Former National President Dan Turner with UCLA's Maddie Schwarz and Vince Palladino. The Agathai chapter received the 2011 Ruth Weimer Mount Chapter Excellence Award.

Within your Mortar Board chapter, there is incredible diversity and talent. You have each been selected to Mortar Board because of your commitment to scholarship, leadership and service.

And now, you have the opportunity to come together to serve your campus in exciting ways. Mortar Board chapters are known for their outreach and service to their campus community.

As leaders on your campus, you can encourage and recognize scholarship and achievement in other students. You can draw attention to the significant ways in which the faculty and staff on your campus impact the lives of students.

You can fill a need on your campus. You can take a cause that is important to your chapter, educate your campus community about that cause, and involve them in making a difference.

As a member of Mortar Board, you will lead by example. Service to your campus will make academic learning come to life and create windows to understanding your community.

We challenge each of you to make this year your "capstone" experience in personal leadership development. You will gain practical leadership skills and will learn a lot about yourself in the process.

And, you have a worldwide community of Mortar Board alumni to support you and cheer you on. We can't wait to see what you will accomplish!

Put Mortar Board on your résumé? Yes!

With over 250,000 alumni worldwide, membership in Mortar Board is a powerful networking tool. Take advantage of your network by putting Mortar Board on your résumé.

Mortar Board is more than just an academic honor; it is an intentional commitment to leadership and service to your campus community. People who know Mortar Board -- and there are a lot of them -- know that selection to our Society is a tremendous honor. Putting Mortar Board on your résumé is like telling a hiring manager that you have already been "vetted."

Once you put it on your résumé, be prepared to talk about it during an interview. Think about all of the great skills you develop through Mortar Board and as a leader in other student organizations. Have you planned major campus events, organized recruitment campaigns or served as an executive officer? Write out what you've done and the skills you took away from each job. Your practical experience can make a great discussion topic during interviews.

And, while you are at it, join the Mortar Board LinkedIn group. Use the group as a resource -- ask job-search questions, get advice from professionals in your field and build your Mortar Board network.

Mortar Board Virtual Book Drive brings books to childrenMortar Board Virtual Book Drive

Reading is Leading was chosen as Mortar Board's national project in 2002. Through Reading is Leading events, our chapters help children and families develop a solid foundation for lifelong learning.

A great way to support Reading is Leading is through the Virtual Book Drive. Now in its fourth year, the Virtual Book Drive is an easy way to support literacy in your campus community. We are partnering with First Book, a national organization that provides books to low-income children, for the drive.

Participation is easy. The Virtual Book Drive is easily accessible, allowing anyone to donate funds online. Many chapters hold fundraisers or campuswide events, while others simply share the donation link as a way to widely promote literacy.

Here's how it works. Your chapter selects a local organization that serves low-income children. Your chapter then raises funds through campus events or other fundraisers. Your selected organization can use those funds to purchase books online in the First Book Marketplace.

Win prizes! Prizes will be awarded throughout the Virtual Book Drive for participating chapters. The chapters that raise the most for their selected organizations will also receive prizes.

Our national goal this year is $30,000. Download our Virtual Book Drive Packet to find out how you can take the Virtual Book Drive challenge!
