CHAPTER UPDATES

Reading is Leading: Virtual Book Drive provides more than 10,000 books to children in need

Mortar Board chapters from across the country raised enough funds to provide more than 10,000 books to children in need through the fourth annual Virtual Book Drive.

The Mortar Board Virtual Book Drive, held in conjunction with the national nonprofit First Book, is a fundraising challenge in which chapters compete to raise funds. Those funds are used to purchase new books for local programs that serve children from low-income families. Many chapters work with existing outreach programs on their campuses, such as after-school, mentoring or tutoring programs.

Overall, chapters raised more than $28,000. Ninety percent of the funds raised by each chapter will be given to its selected campus or community program to buy books. With the First Book Marketplace offering new books for as little as $2.50, more than 10,000 books will be provided to the children served by these programs. The remaining 10 percent of funds raised through the drive support First Book’s mission at the national level.

After the final tally, the top three chapters for 2011 are:

1. Hope College - $13,513
2. Kansas State University - $5,678
3. San Diego State University - $2,285

Chapters that raised more than $500 were awarded additional credits for the First Book Marketplace. The top three chapters, plus the chapters at the University of Colorado, the University of Missouri - Kansas City, and The University of Nebraska - Kearney, each raised enough to be awarded those credits.

The Virtual Book Drive is one way that chapters support Mortar Board’s national Reading is Leading initiative. Established as the national project in 2002, Reading is Leading encourages chapters to support literacy initiatives on their campuses and in their communities and, in doing so, help children and families develop a solid foundation for lifelong learning.

ALUMNI UPDATES

Mortar Board Week, February 12-18, 2012

Mortar Board Week is February 12-18

Mortar Board Week is the celebration of our Society's birthday! Founded on February 15, 1918, Mortar Board turns 94 this year.

Chapters often plan special events around this week, but there are also many ways alumni can celebrate. One special way you can commemorate the week is to wear your Mortar Board pin. If you have misplaced your pin, you can get a new one in the Mortar Board Store.

If you have any photos or mementos from your Mortar Board experience, we'd love for you to share them on our Facebook page! Or, you can email your materials to the National Office and we will post them on your behalf. Of course, you may always mail us your treasures as well.
